Electronic Arts is said to have prematurely cancelled the next Star Wars game

You may remember: at the beginning of 2019, we reported that officials at Electronic Arts had shut down Visceral Games' open-world Star Wars game while it was still in development

. The project, codenamed "Orca," was supposed to use assets originally developed for the Star Wars project "Ragtag," which was cancelled in 2017. But the plan failed, the team had to create virtually everything from scratch, which is why the development took more time than planned. The discontinuation followed.

Subsequently, the developers at EA Vancouver were set to work on a smaller Star Wars project, which was to be completed by the end of 2020 - just in time for the launch of the new console generation. The game, codenamed "Viking," was to be a spinoff of the Battlefront series, and developers from Criterion were also brought in to assist Vancouver.

Now, however, Kotaku's Jason Schreier reports that this project is also said to have been cancelled by EA early on, as early as last year. Schreier refers to the statements of six internal sources at EA, who want to remain anonymous, because they are not allowed to talk about the canceled game.

As a reason for the discontinuation the sources call the not very fruitful cooperation of the two studios in Vancouver as well as London - according to the motto "Too many cooks spoil the broth." The leading forces at Criterion in particular are said to have had ambitious plans for the game and a strong focus on story and characters. When it became clear that the game would never be released in 2020, the decision makers at EA were not interested in extending the development time, according to the report. So here, too, came the cancellation. It would be the third cancelled Star Wars project from EA since 2017.

According to Kotaku, this leaves only the sequel to Jedi Fallen Order and a small Star Wars project in development at EA Motive in Montreal
