With a surprising announcement, Disney executives are bringing joy to Star Wars fans: a new film is on the way and in the director's chair is Taika Waititi. The New Zealand filmmaker and Oscar winner has made a name for himself over the last few years with Jojo Rabbit, Thor 3(aka "Ragnarok") and the vampire comedy 5 Room Kitchen Coffin. Currently, he is also already working on the Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder.
More on Taika Waititi's work: Thor 4 relies on Christian Bale as villain
01:51The Star Wars universe is not new territory for the filmmaker, as he has previously voiced the killer robot IG-11 in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian
, and even directed the gripping first season finale. Waititi will not only serve as director, but also as co-writer, alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who previously worked on the World War II film 1917 and was even nominated for an Oscar because of it. She's also writer in charge of Last Night in Soho - the new film from director Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs the World).Since it's still very early stages of the project, there's no information yet on the story, cast, or even a release date.

Since the end of the third Star Wars trilogy with "The Rise of Skywalker," many fans have been eager to see what awaits us next in the galaxy far, far away. The initially announced idea for a new series of films from the GoT makers has since been dropped. And there are also rumors of a new trilogy from Rian Johnson (director of The Last Jedi and Knives Out) of a cancellation of the project, which Johnson himself contradicts.
