In 1978, something came out that still makes Star Wars fans marvel, laugh and tear their hair out to this day: the "Star Wars Holiday Special," which aired on the CBS network. In this incredibly embarrassing movie we see all our heroes like Chewie, Leia, Han, Luke & Co celebrating the so-called Day of the Living. This holiday of the Wookiees is, of course, heavily based on Christmas. George Lucas himself wrote the script, but was so disappointed with the end result that he spent years making sure to prevent a rebroadcast or even a video release - which of course didn't stop a fan cult from forming around the special, watching copies of it. This year, Disney+ won't feature the Holiday Special, but it will feature a LEGO homage! The "The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special" is primarily about the "new" heroes Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron, who also celebrate the day of life. But aside from that, many characters from the different Star Wars eras are expected to make appearances. Rey and her droid BB-8 are thrown through space and time while exploring a Jedi temple, causing them to encounter Obi-Wan, Darth Vader and the young, rebellious version of Luke Skywalker, among others.
Executive producer Josh Rimes stresses that the whole thing is to be taken with a grain of salt, of course. Popular Christmas and Thanksgiving movies like "Isn't Life Beautiful?", "A Ticket for Two" and "Treat" serve as inspiration for the 45-minute special. Still, the new Christmas special is also meant to celebrate the saga - and provide solace in a chaotic year.
Fun Fact: By the way, did you know that Boba Fett made his first appearance in the Holiday Special? He appeared in a cartoon that was shown during the special!
The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is set to launch on Disney+ on November 17 - at least in the US.
More info can be found on USA Today, where you can even check out the first pictures of the LEGO special!
