In the WoW Shadowlands alpha, select players are currently cavorting exclusively in Bastion. This beautiful, upbeat zone, populated mostly by Kyrians and the owl creatures of the Provost, truly lives up to the (quasi) heaven of World of Warcraft. But that's it for light and cheerfulness in the Shadowlands. The other zones are much more gloomy.
WoW Shadowlands: Zone preview of Ardenwald and Maldraxxus (video) (1) Source: Blizzard As you can see on the map, there are five other zones besides Bastion that are not directly connected, but represent their own realm. The anchor point of the Shadowlands seems to be Oribos. In Oribos, the "Arbiter" judges the fate of all souls. Revendreth is the home of the Venthyr. Here you get the feeling of being in a Transylvanian horror movie. Also the Maw is anything but inviting.
Even though we don't know much about the zone yet, it's clear that the Maw is the exact opposite of Bastion. Below, we take a look at the remaining two zones, Ardenwald and Maldraxxus, which Youtuber GZ Blizz has already somehow been able to extract from the Alpha's game files and throw onto his sandbox server.
Undead armies, necromancy and the battle for souls: that's Maldraxxus. If you've only been used to Bastion, Maldraxxus will put you in a completely different mood. Maldraxxus is the home of the Necrolords, one of the pacts in Shadowlands.
Also dark, but with less undead and necromancy, is the Arden Forest. The home of the Night Fae can be compared to a kind of dark and even more mysterious image of Val'sharah. Here the fae care for the departed souls who had a deep connection to nature.
