WoW: Wrath of the Lich King celebrates its 12th birthday

Remember what you were up to on November 13 or 14, 2008? If you're a veteran of the WoW community, you probably took your first steps into Northrend and faced the new Scourge of Lich King Arthas. Or maybe you leveled your very first Death Knight through the starting area, the hero class that first made its way into Azeroth back then.

The WoW expansion Wrath of the Lich King is celebrating its twelfth anniversary as we return to Icecrown in the Shadowlands pre-event. We therefore say: Congratulations and take the opportunity to briefly review a little. What was new and memorable in the world of Warcraft back then?

The expansion, which many fans still consider to be one of the best or perhaps even the best ever, contained various innovations that would change WoW forever:

  • The new maximum level was 80.
  • The Death Knights entered the game as the first hero class and with their own starting area.
  • Northrend added another continent to the game world and, for the first time, offered two different starting zones to equalize the rush of players to the new content.
  • Storm Peaks included one of the most famous and popular raids in World of Warcraft history (buy now €14.99 ), Ulduar, which many players remember to this day for its iconic boss fights and rare mount Mimiron's Head, among other things.
  • The Argent Tournament in Icecrown offers an all-new daily quest experience that also embeds a dungeon and a raid - but they don't go down well with all players.
  • At the Wrathgate, one of the most memorable moments of the WoW story occurs when Horde and Alliance face the Lich King together, but are betrayed by Dreadlord Varimathras. The Apothecary Society unleashes its specially developed plague on both factions, triggering a massacre that takes the lives of both Bolvar Fordragon and Dranosh Saurfang.
  • A good year after release, on December 8, 2009, we finally get the chance to take revenge and raid the Icecrown Citadel against the Lich King and finally finish him off.

Sara says: " Although I've been actively playing World of Warcraft since the vanilla beta, I have particularly positive memories of Wrath of the Lich King. Not only was it the first addon that I bought as a Collector's Edition, but it also captivated me with its story. The Wrathgate and the subsequent quest line around the Battle of Undercity captivated me more than almost any other story event in World of Warcraft before - and probably after (let's see what Shadowlands has in store). I loved the Death Knights starting area and have been diligently tanking my DK throughout the expansion. I thought it was great that Blizzard decided to provide two starting areas at the same time - I thought back with horror to my first steps in the completely overcrowded and overfarmed Woodfire Peninsula.

I also belong to the minority of players who actually liked the Argent Tournament, including the dungeon and raid. Admittedly, Arthas' sometimes comic-like villainy seemed a bit overdone at some point, but at least it made me like punching him all the more at the end of the expansion. And the fact that Icecrown's look was also strongly based on Mordor did the rest to ensure that Wrath of the Lich King is at the top of my list of the best WoW add-ons - even if I'm still chasing after the blue protodragon...

But now we want to know from you: How do you remember Wrath of the Lich King? Do you think it's one of the best WoW expansions ever? Let us know and write us your opinion below in the comments!
